EV002 VM ENGINE

On my 1960 Venom what is the recommended grade of oil, and petrol that should be used. Can the Broquet catalysts be used successfully in a Venom? - Dougal Burns 15/9/2000

Oil choice could be quite important. Only use a modern multigrade if you are sure the inside of the engine is clean - either because it has just been completely overhauled with all sludge and other deposits removed or you know it has only been run on multigrade since such an overhaul. This is because modern oils have detergents and many other additives which could release the sludge from the various sludge traps inside the engine and cause harm. So the safe answer is a straight 40 grade non-detergent oil; dropping to 30 in winter.
Visit the Federation of Historic Vehicles website via the DOE link in the news section of our website to find out which additives work for running on unleaded. Unless you can get super-unleaded you'll probably need one that raises the octane rating as well on a 1960 Venom.-  TW 16/9/2000
