I'm in the process of upgrading my 1955 MAC to 12v (using the Alton dynamo replacement). I want to fit one of the 8-0-8 Miller Ammeter copies widely available. Can you advise whether this ammeter will handle the 12v? - Ashley Jenkins 30/8/2005

The Miller 8-0-8 type will be fine with your Alton.
Ammeters don't know or care what the voltage is, so you can happily use any ammeter that fits in the hole and can show somewhere near the maximum amps of charge or discharge that it is likely to experience.
Problems only arise if either a greatly improved charging system produces many more amps than the original dynamo, in other words more than 8 amps (which is 96 watts and I think in theory some alternators can), in which case the needle will try to get beyond the 8 amp mark. But even that doesn't hurt the ammeter at all, at least not at the maximum charge that a bike alternator is likely to produce. - TW 30/8/2005
