My Venom has a Criterion 12v alternator and although the headlight is bright it does not seem too well focussed (using the original h/lamp unit) I have tried changing bulbs to no effect.
Any ideas for improvimng matters? - Bryan Clarke 25/1/2003

My own thoughts are first to check that you have tried higher wattage bulbs? If you still use a 36w bulb you get about the same light as a 6v 36w headlight, except that a bit less voltage/watts energy gets wasted in the wires to it. A 45 or 50 or even 60w bulb would be worth trying.
I see in ads in OBM and the Classic mags that you can now get halogen bulbs in our pre-focus format - that should make a big difference.
If it doesn't, you either have a poor earth from the bulb/light unit to frame, or the reflector is dulled or out of shape.
You do need a specific wire for the earth from bulb holder to frame rather than the greasy steering head bearings. If that doesn't work, check the voltage at the bulb when running and if that is over 12.5 volts it's time to try a new light unit......... - TW 26/1/2003

I have been using British Pre Focus 35/35W halogen bulbs for some time, both in my Venom and in my BSA Rocket 3. My experience is that they are brighter than a conventional 45/50 watt tungsten bulb and are simple to fit, being s straight replacement. I have had no problems with reliability or focussing.
I obtained mine from:

I have used the 12V variety, but i believe that he can also supply 6V. My last ones cost me about £6.50 each inc. VAT - Roger Hinton 13/3/2003
