Can anyone please tell me how to determine the wattage output of my Miller Dynamo from visual appearance. It states in the Haynes manual that a 36 watt and a 60 watt were fitted prior to the introduction of the later Lucas 60 watt units, but not how to tell which of the Miller Dynamos are which! - Mick Dennis 30/8/2002
It is correct that a larger output Miller was fitted briefly before the
switch over to Lucas, though I've seen its output referred to as 50W rather than
60W
I've never had one, so I don't know if the external appearance was different
(most likely a longer casing). I'll add your 'Q' to our Q&A page in case
someone knows.
The one reference I have found is that the identification stamping would be type
D6 on the larger output type, rather than DVR. - TW 30/8/2002
My Venom is 1960 and the Miller Dynamo I have has the following letters and
numbers on the end DVR 021488. However on the dynamo casing near the pulley end
it has 60 stamped into it.
I assumed this was a 60W dynamo but this does not fit with your comment about
DVR and D6, which is also stated on Dai Gibbinson's web site. He estimates that
the 60W dynamo was introduced at about 1961. - Dougal Burns 2/1/2003
Just to add to the confusion regarding this question about Miller dynamos, I looked at the 35 watt dynamo on my MAC which has DVR stamped on the end casing near the pulley. The unit measures 3.25" from the end casing to where the cover fits over the cutout etc. My 60 watt dynamo is stamped D6V and measures 4.25" so you were correct in your assumption of the larger output having a longer body. My D6V is classed as a 60 watt, confirmed when it was repaired by an auto electrician some years ago, before I removed its cutout to convert it to run with my 12 volt JG unit. - Tony Ainley 10/1/2003
