EL001 ELECTRICAL

I have a 1956 Venom with a "12 v conversion". It has a dynamo with Lucas E3L in front of the direction arrow and 1049 at the rear of the arrow. The regulator is solid state in an alloy casing about 3.5x1x1.5 inches. The 3 wires in the regulator are black, green and blue. At present there is no charge and the wiring is a mess. Can anyone advise the correct connections to rewire the units? - Ron Sabey 10/2/2001

You have a useful 60W dynamo there instead of the original 36W Miller
The regulator sounds like a "JG", which is an excellent product - I have such fitted to my two Venoms and they have been totally trouble free.
The colours of your wires indicate that it is intended for a POSITIVE EARTH system. It destroys a JG if you fit it to the wrong earth system, so the wires on the negative earth unit are different colours.
I have sent the instructions as an image file. When you click on it you should see the relevant part of the instructions that came with the positive earth unit, and you should be able to print it OK - TW 10/2/2001

I have rewired the Venom using the original JG and have the following results. The ammeter shows a 4 amp discharge with engine off and lights on. It does not show a charge with the engine running HOWEVER the battery rises from 12.5v to 15v even with the lights on and at only modest engine revs. I found that the cable connections at the dynamo were almost nonexistant. I guess my ammeter needle is not right wing! It has never gone right of center - Ron Sabey 23/2/2001

It sounds like your dynamo is wired 'directly' to the battery (in effect) and not through the ammeter.... I've never heard of a 'left-wing only' ammeter! Try connecting the ammeter the other way round, so lights on gives a 'charge' (just as a test of course!)
It also sounds as though your JG and dynamo are working well, though I suppose an ideal regulator should limit the charge to 14.4v, but 15v is very little different. - TW 23/2/2001
