It occurs to me that younger Fishtail readers might wish to see the machine that grabbed the 24hr record from Veloce the following week in 1961, albeit needing 600 cc to do the outright category but not wresting from Hall Green the 500 of course. But by then that magic ton for 24 hrs was immutably Hall Green's.
As an aside I see I mentioned in my report at the time that the French simply could not understand why we English riders --- Bertie Goodman and BMS were our grip-winders --- were so hell-fire bent on 100mph; it simply has no impact in kph terms. So some of them refused to try properly.
Here is Bruce on his way to a formal road test at MIRA of the MLG-prepared world's record breaking BMW R69S; Charlie Locke of that Chiswick, London, dealership handed me the machine. A report appeared in Motor Cycling double pronto before our deadly enemies The Motor Cycle could steal our thunder. I recall the bike was very smooth & pleasant but that I still couldn't get to like a Bee-Em engine-speed clutch, a price you paid for shaft-drive, and you LE fans may preserve the silence please.
