This season we are putting in a good challenge to the 500cc Clubmans
Championship that we won last year. (See below)
To date we have Velos in 1st (Bill Biber Norton Velo), 2nd (Dallas Rankine Venom), and
5th (Kevin Butterworth Norton Velo) positions with the Norton ES2's in 3rd and 4th.
There are no Goldstars to be seen at this stage.
Nick Thomson's new cams and roller followers are certainly making a difference in the 500's and we have just tried one in a MAC. This has
also proven to be a great improvement.
On the dyno my Norton Velo is putting out 42.4 BHP at the rear wheel.
We have started looking for more HP and using a Desktop Dyno simulator it tells us we can get over 50BHP with changes to cam, cam timing,
overlap and Compression. The cam has now been designed and over the next few months we will try to see if the simulation is true.

Subsequent Update # 1
We have just returned from Taupo Race meeting held on 28/29th Sept 2002.
On the Saturday the weather didn't look that promising but the rain held off.
First out was the MOV which went reasonably well but Bill felt that it still
wasn't revving out. The week before I had been talking to a friend who said that
a tapered header had made the world of difference to his 350cc BSA, so I had
made one for the MOV to try out at some stage. Now appeared to be the right time
so whilst Bill was out on the NorVelI set to and changed the header. No other
changes were made. Next outing the MOV went well and was now revving out like we
expected. Unfortunately on the next practice Bill dropped it at the hairpin and
was pushed in with broken levers and bent forks. No rest for the wicked
sometimes, so I got on and replced levers and moved the forks so they would work
as best they could.
The NorVel was going well and no changes were required. The White Venom we also
race still had carburation problems and Nick finished up modifying the slide.
Sunday and race day saw low mist and rain. The track being wet slowed everyone
down a bit and although racing was hard Bill, Dallas and Kevin Butterworth(
another NorVel with Nicks Cam and Followers) went very well with a 1st, 2nd and
3rd in the first race. The ES2 was 4th.
First race on the MOV also went well with Bill winning comfortably by half a
lap, in front of an NSU(Nick's brother) and a 750cc Indian.
The second race of the 500cc Clubmans saw the ES2 having real problems on the
warm up lap and then going sideways off the start line. The track was now wet
and oily, and the riders came in saying it was very dangerous out there. having
said that Bill won again on the NorVel and Dallas came 2nd on the White Venom.
The ES2 was lapped and it's rider having come down at the last meeting said that
he felt the track was too dangerous.
The MOV's 2nd race was pretty much the same as the first with Bill winning.
As the weather was getting worse and the track being very slippery the Committee
called a meeting of riders to vote whether racing should continue. It was
abandoned!
Back home the MOV front end was stripped. One stanchion had 2mm runout and the
brake drum had broken between two ventilation holes. Still that's racing!
Nick is busy working on new cams, which according to our PC Dyno Simulator could
potentially give the bikes up to 10BHP more.
Will keep you informed as to whether the Simulator is telling the truth or
whether we throw it in the bin.
Happy Veloing everyone.
